A mortgage is a loan to finance the purchase of a home.  By contract of the loan, the buyer owes the lender, typically a financial institution, the amount of the loan plus interest and applicable fees.

Usually as collateral for the loan, the lender will hold the deed or ownership of the property until the buyer pays the loan off. However, the buyer occupies the property while making payments on the loan.
